I had the same problem last night re: the WinXP boot issue 'Error:
windows/system32/config/system file missing or corrupt.'
I read the LONG MS article on how to recover from this issue. Here's
what worked for me: I just tried the first part of the article and
booted into recovery mode, deleted my current
c:\windows\system32\config\system file, then copied over the one from
the XP CD (in the windows\repair directory). I rebooted and XP started
just fine, except I had to do some initial setup things like install
correct video driver and setup NIC properties again.
Note: I didn' spend that much time carefully reading the MS article for
recovering from this type of issue, so I was entirely ready to perform
a clean install if my partial hack didn't work and blew up in my face.
Reasoning: I have all my data on a separate drive (D:\, separate
drive/partition from the system drive), and almost all of that (the
stuff I don't want to lose) is backed up over my network to a separate
drive on my file server.
