After starting a computer which has been off for 2 weeks a window came
up saying I do not have a valid copy of windows. Computer was
purchased from Dell several years ago and I added SP2 six months ago.
Since then it has been receiving upgrades normally.

What do I do now???

Please follow this simple troubleshooting procedure:

1. Download and install the MGA Diagnostic Tool:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=56062

2. After running the MGA Diagnostic Tool, click
on the "Windows" tab and then click on "Copy to Clipboard".

3. Next, visit the following website and create a post in the
"WGA Validation Problems" forum and paste the
results of the WGA Diagnostic Data in a detailed post.
http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/default.aspx?SiteID=25

4. A WGA troubleshooting specialist will analyze the data and
recommend an appropriate solution.

Which may or may not work and might even screw up the computer more than
it is.

A censored web based forum where you have to sign up for a Passport
account to use it and send even more information to Microsoft.

Or he or she will censor you if you don't act right.

And why oh why should the OP have to go through this ordeal when the OP
KNOWS he has a legit XP????

To the OP: use System Restore to go back to a date before the flawed MS
BETA spyware was installed.

Yep, that worked for me.
Zone Alarm was the first indication of something amiss. Said a program "wgatray.exe", which I had
not approved for connecting to Internet, was trying to connect. I denied the connection. Then did a
Restore.
So far, so good.
