what are peoples honest opinion on norton system works (antivirus, firewall
etc)? is it worth having? does it slow the system down? make it crash more?

Honestly? I wouldn't let any Norton product anywhere near any of my PCs after a **disastrous** crash caused by one of their products some time ago. I now use AVG for virus checking and ZoneAlarm as a firewall - without any problems.

A lot of people with disagree with me - some can make Norton products work - I can't and won't be trying to again.

I have used norton works for years and not had any major
problems. Even though I have the firwall I use zone
alarm. I do not have the norton clean sweep so it starts
with windows because it slows down the computer. I do
use ghost to back up my computer but I also do not have
it running all the time for the same reason. The problem
with a group of utilities like norton is that if you have
them running all the time they will slow down the
computer. I do like the anti virus and the tools part of
it.

Norton anything: about as useful as teats on a a Mallee bull. Slow virus
scanning. Firewall crackable. Cleansweep you can do yourself. Disc defrag
slow. Good: Disckeeper Lite, Zone Alarm, Vet AV.

Sounds like you already had your mind made up, which is fine. Just go with
what you're comfortable with. Personally, Norton's works fine for me.

I think it's fine if you don't run any of it in the background. Think of it as a set of tools that are available to be used if and when they are needed.

Useless, costly, troublesome trash that is totally unneeded.

Phil,
run Phil, run. Get Panda for an antivirus. They send you
notices via email about alerts. Easy to use and DOESN'T
take over your computer forever!!!!

still picking norton from under my skin

Greetings --

Norton AntiVirus 2002 and Norton Personal Firewall 2002 are very
good
tools to use. I haven't found a need for the rest of the SystemWorks
package, though.
