Have tried twice now to install Norton System Works 2003,
and each time it will not load the anti-virus scanning
modules, and each time it will cause my machine to stop
running any java applets. It will also not allow me to do
a restore, so I end up reloading XP all over again. I've
followed the Norton suggestions and manually deleted all
the necessary files before trying to install it the second
time, and ended up with the same results. I just bought
the program and hate to think I've wasted my money on it.
Any suggestions or ideas on how to get this loaded and
running would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Symantec has stand-alone utilities RNAV and RNIS to
remove legacy remnants from installs of Anti-Virus and
Personal Firewall.
You should use Add/Remove to uninstall any Symantec
products listed (including Live Reg and Live Update.)
Then download and run these applications.
Norton System Works contains applications that are not
fully trustworthy under Windows XP. Speed Disk and
Disk Doctor and somewhat "Risky" to use. I recommend
users buy and install Norton Internet Security, which only
has Nav and the Firewall. Of the two programs mentioned
above Norton Disk Doctor has a track record of causing
problems on systems running Windows XP.
Note: Norton Anti-Virus 2003 will automatically install the
Norton Protected Recycle bin. This is something
new to the Anti-Virus product line.

On your NSW 2003 CD your should find a utility called "Symcln.exe".
Uninstall NSW 2003, reboot, then run Symcln.exe.
The utility can also be found here:

I have Norton Internet Security 2003, and my Norton AntiVirus did not
install the Norton Protected Recycle bin.

Interesting. I "just" installed Norton Internet Security 2003 yesterday
evening and it also did NOT install any Norton Protected Recycle bin.

The Norton Protected Recycle Bin is a feature of the old Norton
utilities that currently is available with Norton SystemWorks only.

The Norton Protected Recycle Bin also comes with NAV Pro 2003.
Although I can't imagine why anyone would want to use it. It's one of
the most useless "features" I've ever come across.
