Having experienced problems applying major patches on windows before I
decided to leave SP2 for sometime on by VAIO PC. Last night however I
decided to apply the patch.

All was going well for 15mins and then my PC rebooted in the midst of
applying Windows XP SP2 patch. This left the system in an unstable
state. Luckily I had an image backup taken last week that I restored
from an external drive and got the system back up.

My questions, is it possible to Norton Ghost the image onto a 3rd
partition that I can switch to in the event I have this kind of problem
again? Has anyone does this before?

TIA

Sanj

Your third partition will have a different drive letter causing, probably a
none functioning sys.
If you want a fail safe (allmost) use raid mirror

Yes, shouldn;t be a problem. You need to do two things to make the other
partition bootable:

Edit BOOT.INI on the new partition to reflect the correct partition-number
in the startup option. (Hint: you can make three more options (covering
partitions 1-4) to cover all eventualities _before_ you ghost the partition,
this is easier than trying to edit a file in an NTFS partition on a computer
that won't boot. )

To select the new partition, Change the Active partition with DOS FDISK, or
with Ranish/XOSL. The active partition will always be C:
