last night I updated my norton antivirus subscription. i
was prompted to restart my computer which i did. once i
was back up, i ran the antivirus program scanning the
whole computer, after a few hundred files my screen
suddenly went blank, after a while i tried to re boot and
got the following message:

PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Existing Intel Boot Agent

Reboot select proper boot device or insert boot media in
selected boot device.

I checked all connections and they were fine.

Can you tell me what happened and how i should proceed?

Google each of these errors. The second is actually "exiting intel boot
agent". The consensus is to get to BIOS setup on boot, F2, Del, Esc,
F12, or whatever the key is for your computer, and disable anything
having to do with "PXE". This is apparently a failed attempt to load
the OS from a network connection and might appear in the selection of
device boot order (floppy, CD, HD, network [this is it]) or some other
location peculiar to your BIOS.
