Norton Antivirus 2007 doesn't work

I recently downloaded the new NAV 2007 and went through the install
sequence. When it said it was completed, and a reboot was necesary, I
did that. However, when I later attempted to open the file, i.e. to
run the program, it came up with a message saying the computer was "at
risk" and that the reason was "incomplete configuration." It has a
"continue" button, but that certainly didn't do anything.

Now, after 16 or so online "help-chat" sessions, I've been repeatedly
disconnected, repeatedly directed to do things that mandated breaking
the connection, but otherwise accomplished nothing, and am no closer to
a working version.

In the processes I've been directed to execute by the help-agent,
there's been some damage done to the system. I'm interested, of
course, in reversing this, but, more than anything else, I'm curious,
Does this product actually work? Why doesn't the Symantec support team
have a functional installer? Why do they have links that don't do
anything?

Has anybody else seen this debacle?

You will find that quite a few people in here recommend against using many
of the Symantec products. They tend to be bloated, cause problems down the
road, and as you have found, the tech support leaves something to be
desired. There are better, less bloated, free or low cost AV alternatives.

So, Rock, please be specific. What would you recommend I examine prior
to purchase?

Well for anti-virus there is AVG (free and paid), Avast (free and paid),
AntiVir (free and paid), Ca eTrust (low cost) - to name several. You will
get many different opinions on which to use. Each one works pretty well
though some have higher detection rates. There is a website that runs
comparisons of AV products but I don't have the links to that handy. I
presently use the Avast free version on both an XP and a Vista installation.
Most importantly - be careful in your computing and surfing habits. An
ant-virus is just one component. Others are a firewall, a combination of
anti-spyware / adware programs, SP2 on your windows installation and all
post SP2 security updates; a router with NAT is a good idea as well.

Norton and McAffee Virus Scan are worthless. Too many viruses target those
two products and disable them, they're slow to update and are otherwise
more trouble than they're worth.

Uninstall Norton. Go to http://free.grisoft.com/ and get yourself AVG.

I had a similar experience. I downloaded an uninstall application,
ran it, then attempted to re-install. That failed. The tech
suggested that I return the product to the vendor for a full refund. I
did. Sadly, Symantec is not what it used to be. NAV will likely slow
your system down more than other anti-virus applications (read
Consumer Report's anti-virus ratings).

Just purchase Dorton Internet Security 2007 and installed it on all 3 of our
networked WinXP home computers. No installation or performance issues on any
of the 3 PC's.
I have used NIS since version 2003 and want to share that Symantec's claim
that they have slimmed down the NIS 2007 footprint and resource usage is
evident .
We are very pleased with this much improved NIS 2007.

I have had the same type of issues with NAV 2007. Not only could I not
get support or find a phone number, the online customer service did not
work either. Now I cannot access my email accounts and many websites.

Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? I have uninstalled and set
IE to default and nothing works.
