Hello ...

I would appreciate it very much if those knowledgeable about the
merits, uses, et cetera of these anti-virus and firewall programs
would share their opinions about whether one needs both programs.

I am currently using Norton Anti-Virus on a trial basis. I have been
told by a Hewlett Packard tech that it is not necessary to have both
programs and that the Norton is sufficient.

Any opinions?

Many thanks.

Sadly these days both Anti-Virus products and Firewalls have their place on
home machines. Each product protects you from a large number of threats,
quite a lot of which are the same, but equally there are some problems that
only Anti-Virus or only a Firewall will protect you from.

So whilst one product may keep you safe 95% of the time, it is reaching the
stage that to stay safe 100% of the time you need both (and then only if
they are properly configured and up to date).

Norton Anti-Virus I find to be highly effective on home machines, but
different people will of course recommend different products. As for a
Firewall, if you don't yet want to spend money on such a product, then you
can use Windows XP's built-in Firewall.
