At times, when I am about to close a document, I get the message "Do you want
to save changes to the template Normal?" After saying yes to saving the
changes, is there a way to return to the Default settings?

Thanks for your assistance.

If you delete or preferably rename normal.dot to oldnormal.dot (in case you
change your mind again) then Word will build a new default template.

How do I return to the original settings? Where can I locate the Normal
files? Thanks for your help.

Normal.dot will be located in the folder designated for your user templates
folder. If you haven't set this, it will be the default location, which
varies by Word version and operating system. You need to have your Windows
folder options set to view hidden and system files and to display extensions
on common file types. For more on the different kinds of templates, tabs on
the file new dialog, and locations of templates folders see
