My normal.dot template is listed at over 25MEG in size! Can anyone tell me what I can do to reduce it down to a more normal level?

Just delete it. Word will create a new one when you
restart.

*Don't* delete it, you will lose any customizations you may have made. But
you can rename it (e.g. OldNormal), let Word create a new one, and copy your
customizations into the new one via the Organizer (under Tools | Macros).

A previous instance of ballooning Normal was caused by a badly written
add-in, if I remember correctly. You might want to check what add-ins you
have in the Word Startup folder.

Under Tools | Options, Save tab, you should check "prompt to save Normal
template." If you then get a question about "save Normal template?" every
time you exit Word, that's another sign of a sloppy add-in making changes to
Normal.

It looks u have some virus on system who resize u r files.
if u did not Customiz any thing in template just delete it, MS word will genrate a new fresh one as u re open word.

As Dayo Mitchell already said:

Don't delete normal.dot until you are done with it. You may not be aware of
customizations that you've stored in normal.dot. It holds macros, styles,
AutoText, some AutoCorrect, keyboard assignments (which you can't move
without a special utitility), and custom toolbars. Instead, rename it
normalold.dot or something similar. Then if you need anything in it, you
still have it.
