Normal.dot template

I have a new computer loaded with Windows XP. My old
computer used Windows 98. I loaded Office 2000 on to the
new machine. I want to customize the Normal.dot
template, but neither Word nor Excel will let me see the
Applications Data\Microsoft\Templates subdirectory, so I
can't open the template to change it.

Anyone have any ideas?
 
Hi, Stan. Use Windows Explorer to search for the normal.dot file (include hidden and system folders and files). When Explorer finds it, double-click the normal.dot file in the search results pane to open it.
 
I can find the file using Explorer, but when in Work, I
can't open it because "File\Open" won't let me see the
subdirectory.

Which is why I said to double-click the normal.dot file in the Explorer search results pane. If you insist on opening it from Word, then use Windows Explorer to remove the "hidden" attribute from the normal.dot file and the folder it is located in (right-click on the file/folder, left-click Properties | General tab | uncheck the "Hidden" box).

Shouldn't it be "Right-click and choose Open" to open Normal.dot from
Windows Explorer? Double-clicking will just create a regular document,
unless you are on a Mac...

Or have I missed something? Reading too fast perhaps!

I guess I didn't make myself clear. I can open
normal.dot as you directed. But when I change it and try
to save it, it won't let me save in the "Applications
Data\Microsoft\Templates" directory. None of the above
path is available.

In Windows Explorer, click on Tools | Folder Options | View | enable the "Show hidden files and folders" radio button under Advanced Settings. Then you should be able to see and save to the hidden folder in Word.
