normal.dot always appears on close

I have 2002 SP2 and even if I remove my normal.dot and let Word create
a bare bones new one, I always see (just for a moment or two) a
normal.dot sheet after closing a document. I'm not asked whether I
want to save it, it just appears and then it closes by itself. I don't
have "prompt to save Normal templatet" ticked either.
And "normal.dot is" is always the first item in the list of last used
documents under "File".

Is this "normal"?

You should have the "prompt to save normal template" checked. Although the
prompt can be annoying at times, it is a kind of smoke alarm. Unchecking it
is like taking the battery out of the alarm.

It doesn't matter whether I have it checked or not. Normal.dot always
appears after the document closes and then Word closes. Since I
normally DO have "prompt to save normal template" checked I just
wanted to see if unchecking it made a difference. It doesn't.
Even with it checked, normal.dot appears during the closing of Word
without any prompt to save. This would indicate that there has been no
change to it. Why then does it pop up at the end is what I'm trying to
find out. It certainly never used to.

I just developed the same symptom on my system, with XP Pro and Offic
2000 (sp3) both stable for a year plus...the only thing I did eithe
just before or just after the symptoms appeared is load the ne
ScanSoft 14 Pro Office...and I am not sure about the exac
relationship...

Deleting the normal.dot, checking for unusual macros, running th
latest McAfee scan (good as of 5 days ago) have not helped.

I cannot fathom what is going on

Searching further down the forum, I came upon a similar problem somewha
differently worded. If you follow the link they recommend:

http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/CheckIfAddinsInstalled.htm

it directs you to an easy way in Word to add the 'COM Add-ins' revea
feature to your menu bar - and see in an instant which add-ins fro
newly added programs might be causing problems. You can then turn of
selectively those .dll features and see if it fixes the problem.

In my case, ScanSoft OmniPage 14 is the culprit. They should d
better

It's a good bet that ScanSoft has added a (poorly written) add-in to the
Word or Office Startup folder and this is what is causing the problem. If
not a .dot add-in, it might be a COM add-in. See

I too have had this problem, and it occurred right after installing
Scansoft's OmniPage Pro 14. I have posted it on this website before with no
help. After much investigation, I fouund the culprit to be the
OfficeAddin14.dll which is used to allow Office programs to acquire text
directly into them from the scanner or other sources. This macro writes two
new menu opitions on the File menu. I renamed this file OfficeAddin14old.dll
and unregistered the Office components in the Direct OCR options for OmniPro
14, and now Word works as it did before. I have lost the options of the
direct OCR for these products, but at least it is a workaround until and if
Scansoft updates this dll file. If you do this and want to re-register the
product, you will have to rename the file to its original name. The file is
located in Program Files/Scansoft/OmniPagePro14.0. Hope this helps you.

As Jerry says it is the OmniPagePro14 "OfficeAddin14.dll" which is
causing the problem. Just unregistering Word in OmniPage doesn't do
the trick, you have to rename the dll as well.

But...

After you've renamed it and unregistered Word in Omni's Tools Options,
if you undo the dll rename and set it back to what it was, you find
that the COM add-in in Word has been unticked and so is longer loaded
at startup. This led me to think that you really don't have to rename
the dll, just untick the COM add-in once you've added the menu item as
suggested in the link above.
