A friend has just had his PC reformatted and Win XP reloaded. the PC ran ok
but every so often it would shut down, maybe every 45 minutes, or 2 hours
sometimes.

It has now ceased to start up at all, when switching on,the PC runs untill
you reach the point where it tells you to press DELETE, the screen thens
shows message
FLASH MEMORY, then the PC stops dead, blank screen, nothing.

Is this a memory problem?

This is a hardware problem.

Best approach is to disconnect the hard disk (to prevent any further OS
damage) and use a floppy or bootable CD/DVD to test the hardware. DOS,
Knoppix, Ubuntu, BartPe, or even the Windows CD are suitable.

It may be that the onboard battery is low. Or it may be that the BIOS
flash-chip has a fault. But no, it doesn't refer to the machine's RAM.
