After trying to get a new monitor to work i was reseting
the computer a few times, i stupidly ignored the warnings
to check my hard drive after each reboot and that ended
in several files becomming corrupt, including
ntoskrnl.exe! :-/ .

I fiddled around with a few boot up disks but i cannot
find a solution. I have two hard drives, one is very
small, the other, main one has win xp prof, installed and
is buggad.

I can get to the setup screen to try and install windows
on the second, small hard drive just to back up my files
i need, before formatting it all so that the error
doesn't re occur. But no OS seems to want to install. In
XP the setup states that the file 'hal.dll' is corrupt,
so setup has to cancel.
I also tried a Win 98 boot disk and old cd, this time the
dos screen stops when i think it is trying to load the cd
drivers. So, it cant loacte the cd i think.
The win98 boot disk manages to name the main drive as C
and the small one as D, but when using another disk, they
have no letters.

I tried Partition Magic disks, but they error when i try
using them.

I'd rather not format my pc as i have important work on
there that is needed!

ANY solutions VERY welcome!

Thanks

Richard.

.
detach the main drive and slave to another computer
recover the data and clean install.
