I was having the "unable to log on" problem. A couple questions down the
last link described it perfectly. However, the process included using the
windows xp startup CD which we don't have for the desktop. It also says I
can use setup floppy disks. Someone lead me through this darkness.

Read and download here
http://bootdisk.com/

Note: Save the download to your hard disk and then send it to the floppy,it
will take more then one floppy to install.

What part did you not understand?

Well i finally 'understood' everything. BUT of course a new problem came
up...I have the 6 floppy disks now of XP home SP1 loaded. Disk 1 works fine,
disk 2 not so fine. I get the message \ntkrnlmp.exe error(or something of
that nature). Windows support is absolutely NO HELP with this matter. Also
have done a google search on this and still haven't been able to find a
solution to this problem. Please tell me you are the one person who could
help me

Could be a corrupt file on floppy
