am experiencing a strange problem with my windows
sounds. It doesn't play any windows sounds for one of my
user accounts, but it does in the other accounts.

The account that it doesn't play the sound on is the main
account that i use, the account that i install software
from etc. And i just get a windows internal BEEP. BUT..
audio video sounds etc are all playing fine through the
speakers, its just the windows sounds.

I recently installed a 4.1 sound card around the time of
the problem, but have since upgraded my mobo with built
in 5.1 sound so am not using the 4.1 sound card any more.

I have been told at work that this may be a bug in the
service pack, but i seam to remember this happening a
while after I installed the service pack.

I have tried to turn the sounds schemes off and on,
checked the levels and made sure that nothing is muted.

If anyone has any ideas, it would be greatly appreciated.

I ran into this after trying ... Nero Player or something similar. I had to
restore the registry settings for the "default" sound in XP to set things
right again.

MVP Kelly Theriot has a script on her website for this. If you go to the
"D" page of her "Windows Tips from A to Z"
(http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_d.htm) and scroll down to "Ding Wav"
you will find a link to the script, directions on how to use it and a
description of how to make the changes manually if you prefer that method
instead of using the script.
