i'm getting ready to perform an unattended install of winxp pro.
i'd like to install to a directory other than "windows" for security
reasons, but haven't found any information as to possible negative
consequences. any? am i just asking for trouble and should stick
with the default path?

You *can* change this, but why bother? Stick with the defaults. You can
achieve better security by adjusting the User Account privileges than by
renaming the System folder. Read up on privileges in the Windows on-line
help file by doing Start > Help and Support.

i know about account privileges. are there any potential negative
consequences to installing winxp pro into a folder other than
WINDOWS?

Hi

No, but I can't see that it will give you any positive consequences either...

okay, you guys win. :)

i'll do a standard installation in that regard, but i've heard that
there are various exploits that can be taken advantage of assuming
that the interloper knows file names and paths. the theory goes
that if you install into nonstandard directories, the interloper
would have to guess at paths and make his job much tougher.

thanks for the feedback.

Hi

The Windows folder location can be obtained by API, a registry read or reading
a environment variable, so that would be a very poorly written exploit in that
case. It might help some for a remote attack by a inexperienced hacker maybe
(but if a inexperienced hacker is able to get access to your computer, your
computer is badly configured securitywise anyway) ...
