Friend is having major problems. He is unable to browse any web pages
after removing some adware/malware? He can ping DNS servers fine so
connection is there but TCPIP isn't working. I tried WinSock Xp Fix as
this cured another PC with the same problem but it won't fix this one.

Any other ideas please?

TIA

cheers,
Len

Try doing this:

Click the START Menu
Click Run...
Type in : cmd
Press OK.
This will get you a DOS like commando promt. Use the following
commands in the respective order there.

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

If it fails , please post the results here. GOod luck :D

DNS won't work at all so I got him to set up a fixed IP which works at
the ping level but not TCPIP.

Is he behind a router? If yes , what is his Internet Service Provider?

He is behind a router/adsl modem (Wannadoo ISP) BUT they have a second
PC connected to the router and this one works absolutely fine! They
have just tried a repair of the installation and they still get the
same problem ! Network connection status shows a private IP assigned
NOT from DHCP as it's set up to be. DHCP server must be OK as the
second PC is getting an IP from the router As posted earlier, if he
sets up a manual IP he can ping DNS servers fine BUT still no TCPIP
working. I suspect they are now going to reformat and reinstall from
scratch and if that doesn't fix it then where next !!

well , you could try changing the LAN setting and set the lease time
per IP adres to "Forever" , then turn on and off the router and
modem , and go to Status , then to Internet Connection , and Release /
Renew the routers connection. If you dont have names like that in your
router , try finding the apropriate setting... Good luck!
