No volume control in taskbar

Under control panel --> sounds, I've selected "place volume icon in
the taskbar. But it never shows up there? Under Advanced ---> Play
COntrol each item is set at the midway point. I can use - and + on my
MS keyboard to control the volume but I prefer to use the taskbar
icon. Can anyone help me out? OR at least tell me where to start
looking?

If you're using an auto log on, this can sometimes make
the volume control not load in the notification area.
Just an idea as that what was happening to me about a
month ago for some reason.
