No USB port option for adding a printer

My Lexmark z25 cannot be installed for some reason. When I
plug the USB cable into the port, Windows XP (sp1 with USB
updates) detects it as 'inkjet color printer' but the
software included cannot detect the printer. I tried to
add the printer manually through windows, but when it asks
me to select a port, no USB port is available (only LPT,
COM and FILE ports are available) Is there a USB update
that I need? All my other USB devices work properly
(wireless keyboard and mouse, webcam, DV recorder link,
however I believe all of these are plug and play, where
the printer is not) Any help would be most appreciated.

That was the very first thing I did. It's not the lexmark software. For some
reason I cannot select the USB as a printer port when manually adding the
printer. My mainboard is a Gigabyte 7ZX with the VIA KT133 chipset, I need
to know how to reinstall (possibly just correctly install) my USB so that
Windows will allow me to use the USB as a printer port instead of just using
plug and play devices through USB. I've searched VIA's site as well as
Gigabyte
thoroughly for a USB driver with no luck.

Try Start/Control Panel/Printers and Faxes/right click on the "checked"
active printer/properties/ports tab. See what's checked as port for your
printer
Hope this helps.

Did you install the software BEFORE connecting the printer to the PC?

If you did it the wrong way round, you need to look at Bruce Sanderson's
instructions for COMPLETELY uninstalling the printer... because it's a
Lexmark it's a little more complicated than any other manufacturer.
Disconnect the printer before starting ...

Pay particular attention to his special section on Lexmark printers.

After the reboot (when the PC is clean) download a new set of drivers from
the Lexmark website at www.lexmark.com.... install the software and do NOT
connect the printer until the software tells you to do so.
