no top to TM

HELP!!!!
I start task manager and all i get is a grey box with "Task" and "status"
showing the applications running but no menu bar. It seems to have been
cropped off.plus i can't close down the window.

Double-click the border (the area where buttons are).

You're running in what's called "Small Footprint Mode." To change back and
forth from this mode to regular mode, just double-click on the border.
