no system sounds

I disconnected my speakers today because they were barely
audible. I plugged them into my iPod and they worked
fine. Now, after they have been re-plugged in to my
system, the original symptom is worse. I cannot even hear
system sounds over the speakers. I also cannot hear
system sounds over a pair of headphones.
I have gone through the troubleshooter to no avail. The
speakers are not powered speakers, but heretofore they
have worked, albeit with lower volume than desired.
This is mystifying to me, because they worked before I
unplugged them to test them on the iPod.
By the way, I did re-boot after the speakers were re-
plugged in.
The drivers seem fine. The sound card reports no problem.
Anyone have ideas?
