NO system sounds!! 2nd day of trying..Help

Running xp pro. Suddenly I have no beeps, bonks, honks or oink noises. All
other sound features work great ie: CD's, Media Player. Have re-installed
media players and drivers and eliminated odd drivers and reinstalled about
everything I can think of. IN "Sounds" I can select new themes and change
options with no resulting changes. Speaker icon never shows up no matter what
I do. Also there are no "advanced" options on the volumne control panel. I
think I have a damaged sndvol file. Support page advise doesn't work in
replacing just that file from XP CD. Microsoft bulletin seems to indicate
this is a problem with portables undocking dirty and hot. Maybe I have blown
the file during recent shut-downs. Help. Hair is growing thin.

My neighbours think it's great when I play those kind of sounds at about 300

Nice site....but.........Didn't work. I'll continue scoping the site but the
obvious repair title (changing registry) didn't work. thanks
