I got a bug in my computer and had to download everything and now I have no
sound. I have windows xp and when I go into systems theres a + next to sound
card but theres no hardware. I'm very new to the use of a computer so I'm not
to sure on the different terms. Please help. I did do everything that the
comp. wiz says to do and it comes back no hardware found." PLEASE HELP A
COMPUTER DUMMY". Thank You

Since the sound hardware is not present in the Device Manager, XP does not
detect it.
Now, do you have onboard sound, PCI or USB audio card? Most likely, you have
at least onboard sound. Of course, you can have both, but I doubt.

1. for onboard, you only have to Enable Audio (or some other words) in BIOS,
then install the drivers for onboard sound and, optionally, whatever sound
application necessary (speakers setup, volume controls, equalizer etc). All
those drivers and apps. should be available either on the installation CD or
at the PC/mobo manufacturer's web site.

2. if you have a sound card (either PCI or USB) check the connections and
IRQ conflicts - albeit XP would get those right. If the PCI card is properly
installed and XP does not detect it on start up, change the PCI slot and
check the Device Manager again. If thet does not work, try to instasll the
audio drivers using Add New Hardware utility - you still need to know the
location of the audio drivers, or just pick a driver close to your hardware.
