No Sound on XP Startup or Shutdown

Although I have my shutdown and startup sounds selected in Control
Panel and they test OK, they don't play when I boot or shutdown my
machine. All other sounds play fine. This happened suddenly a couple
of months ago. I have tried other sounds to no avail. Strangely, this
same problem happened to a friend of mine at about the same time. This
leads me to think it was the result of an update, either XP or some
3rd party program that we share. If that is the case, it may be a
common problem that someone has identified, with, hopefully, a fix.

Do you have tweakui installed? if so make sure that "beep
on errors" is checked it's in the general listing. If
this doesn't apply here's a good place to start.

Not only was it a good place to start, it was also a good place to
stop! That was the problem, although not very intuitive. Since neither
I nor my friend with the same problem had made any changes with
TweakUI recently, some other program must have reset that bit. But if
it does it again, at least it's an easy fix. Thanks very much!
