no sound on welcome screen

a very simple problem, i hope.windows xp home edition.when the welcome screen
appears i have until this afternoon always had the welcome sound aswell. no
sound for some reason.(yes the volume is on.)can someone please point me in
the right direction to fix this. thank-you.
 
Control Panel>Sound and Audio Devices
Make sure Windows default sound is selected under Sounds tab.
