no sound from my speakers

i've connected it all properly, tehy're turned on but theres no sound coming
out.
theyre brand new do i need to do something else on my computer to get them
to work?

Are these powered speakers (they have a power supply that plugs into an
electrical outlet) or passive (no power supply; they just connect to the
speaker jack of the computer)?
