no sound device

Suddenly, I'm getting no sounds when the computer starts,
shuts down, gets an e-mail message, etc. The speakers
work, other sounds come through. I have the boxes
checked to get these sounds and have had them checked for
a year or so. The Sounds and Devices tab says "no sound
device." Well, I had one, I think, a couple of days ago.
What has happened and how do I correct it? Thanks much.

When troubleshooting a problem you should first try the easy fixes, if for
no other reason than to eliminate them as solutions. In this case, go into
Device Manager and uninstall your sound driver. (In the Driver tab, click
the Uninstall button.) Now restart your computer and let Windows detect your
sound device and install its own driver.

If that works, it means that your original sound driver became damaged. Not
to worry - it just happens sometimes. You can stick with Windows' own driver
or upgrade the newest driver from the manufacturer's web site.
