NO SOUND DEVICE

I don't have any sound coming from my comp at all (Windows XP home). I go to the Device Manager and double click the yellow question mark, which comes up as Multi Media Audio Controller. Then I click 'General' tab and click 'reinstall driver'. I then run the windows XP home edition cd. After the cd has been run the following message comes up - the hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software. Does anyone know what I can try next? Any ideas please?
 
Thanks for your help Roger - where would I find the details about my sound card? Is it listed anywhere on my computer?

Did you receive a CD with drivers when you got your machine?
Do you know what the sound card is? If you did, you could go to the
manufacturer's webpage and download the latest drivers and install
them.

You can try going to Start > Run > dxdiag
and look in the sound tab, or
Start > Run > msinfo32
(Hardware resources > Components > audio device)

You can download belarc advisor or aida32 and it should provide
details about your hardware and software
