Because of numerous problems, I did a clean reinstall of Windows XP Pro.
All went well except that I have no sound.

Any suggestions??

NO, I did not install drivers. I have no idea if I have a sound card or
whether it is built into the motherboard. Guess I'll have to contact the
manufacturer unless you have some other ideas.

You must install drivers for all of your hardware. General driver
information:

Never get drivers from Windows Update. Get them from:

1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM
computer (HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the drivers.

To find out what hardware is in your computer:

1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific
model machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers
anyway)
3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc
Advisor. The older Aida32 is good for this, too.

Thanks for your help. Needed Realtek drivers. Did a Google search and
found and installed them. Now have sound.

Whether you have a physically separate sound card, or it's built into your
PC's motherboard is not relevant.

All PCs that are capable of making sound need drivers installed so that the
sounds can actually be produced.

Maybe I'm mis-reading your response, but you sound a bit testy about being
asked if you had installed the drivers.

You're the one who posted the question, and people responded with good
information -- namely that you probably didn't install drivers.

If you don't like the answers, why did you even bother to originally post?

Excellent! Glad you got it sorted. Thanks for taking the time to post back.
