no sound after reformat, need to install sound software

I reformatted my computer but I have no sound, this is because I need to install the software. My computer was custom built so I'm not sure what sound card it is and I can't find the original sound software cd. How do I find out what sound card I have and can I download the software from the net?

Go to your start menu / accessories / system tools / system information....
click components / sound device
