no sound after installing XP

I installed XP home edition and Doom 3 at the same time. My computer is a
little older so I had to uninstall Doom because it wouldn't work. I noticed
after that I didn't have any sound. I have updated my drivers for my sound
card but I have no sound at all. No music, no windows sounds, nothing. I
don't have a little speaker/volume control icon on my tool bar at the bottom
right. Any advice???
