hi, this problem is happening more often recently, windows xp on my computer.
in any application, software, desktop etc the mouse pointer can be moved but
icons and files cannot be clicked with the mouse. i need to open windows task
manager and simply close it again to make the mouse respond to any files or
applications i wish to open or use. would it be a software issue or a
registry issue or a possible problem with the mouse itself? anybody else
experienced anything similar?

Have you tried a different mouse?

Alias

Is this happennig atfter logon/startup, or all the time?
If at initial "boot", try just waiting instead of opening Task Manager. The
amount of time that passes may be making it appear as if Task Manager is
involved when it is merely coincidental.
What's your malware/security condition?
When did you last Defrag/dump unnecessary files?

And per "Alias", borrow another mouse for a reboot and see if there's any
change.

There is no way to determine the cause of your problem from your post.
As you say, it could be hardware or software. Here are a few
suggestions:

1. For software troubleshooting, start by making sure the computer is
completely virus/malware-free:

2. If the machine is clean, see if the problem occurs in Safe Mode. If
it doesn't, then you know that something running in Regular Mode is
causing the issue. Clean-boot troubleshooting is helpful to narrow down
the culprit(s):

3. Look in Event Viewer for clues. Start>Run>eventvwr.msc [enter]

4. If the software troubleshooting doesn't help, here are some general
hardware troubleshooting steps:

Testing hardware failures often involves swapping out suspected parts
with known-good parts. If you can't do the testing yourself and/or are
uncomfortable opening your computer, take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local equivalent of BigStoreUSA).
