No response at logon window

Hi-

I've been using NT 4.0 for 4 years. I last used my computer to prepare some Word files. The next day when I tried to boot up, the logon window would not respond to the alt-ctrl-del key sequence. The keyboard is still physically attached to the computer, and there is some recognition of keyboard commands-during the boot up sequence, I can use the up/down keys to select VGA mode and F1 to change settings (I haven't changed any settings, but was able to get to the window to do so from the keyboard.)

Any suggestions on what is wrong or how to fix it? Or somewhere else I could go for help?

Thanks.

Beverly,

Having the keyboard lockup at logon, when it worked at the boot.ini shows that a driver or overlay is taking over.

What type of keyboard is it?
Do you have PCAnywhere installed - or any program like it.
PcAnywhere takes control of the keyboard and can prevent you from logging in if one of its files are damaged.

Because it is NT4.0 it is a little harder to troubleshoot.

Did you try LAST KNOWN GOOD ?
Did you press the "L" key before pressing enter on "Original Configuration/ Profile 1" ?

Hope this helps lead you in a direction,
