Hi--dug out my Baldur's Gate to try and play it on my new
laptop and am having troubles with it. When starting or
loading new areas, it frequently gives me run time errors
or just crashes. If I remember correctly, I fixed this
when I played it previously on my desktop with these steps:

From Control Panel, choose Systems
Performance tab
File System
CD-ROM tab, under Optimize Access Pattern For, click No
Read Ahead

My laptop has Windows XP, however, and there is no
Performance tab; Performance settings are on the Advanced
tab, but I find no more of the above setting choices from
there--obviously these options are found elsewhere on
Windows XP. Can someone point me in the right direction,
please?

Thanks much!
