I just did a clean install of XP. I let it reformat the drive and install
fresh. The first thing I did after this was to let the windows updates run.
I am now on sp2. For some reason I can't get a lot of programs to install.
I have been able to install MS Office, NIS, Ad-aware, and WinTotal(appraisal
software). But I can't get anything else to install. I have tried
installing Visual Studio .net, Adobe Profesional 6.0, and epson scanner
software. All of these have hung at about 75% complete. I have let the
installer run for up to 12 hours. I followed the doc in the KB about this,
but it didn't help. Does anyone have any ideas? I havn't tried to install
anything else, I got frustrated after these attempts. Thanks in advance.

Hi

Are they any entries in the Event Viewer that may show what the problem is?
Any error message(s) when the installation(s) hang?

I did find a couple of entries that might relate: (1) Hanging application
setup.exe...
(2) In regards to msinstaller: Failed to connect to server. Error:
0x8007043C.

I have also found a lot of system errors that deal with the bios. They are
all at different addresses, but they read like this: AMLI: ACPI BIOS is
attempting to read from an illegal IO port address (0x75), which lies in the
0x74 - 0x76 protected address range. This could lead to system instability.
Please contact your system vendor for technical assistance.

Would this have anything to do with it? I have had problems in the past w/
my bios. It is a compaq and the bios sucks. I havn't looked lately, but
last time I did, they did not have a new bios to install. Hopefully this
isn't the problem.

"Failed to connect to server" suggests to me that the software needs an
internet connection to be open in order to work properly.

The AMLI: ACPI BIOS warning appears on my computer too. I don't think it is
anything to worry about. Just means the BIOS is outdated.

I am having a similar problem but I am unable to restart the msinstaller
service. The error message I keep getting is "Error 1053: The service did
not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion."

I am just trying to find a fix for this. Anything that requires
msinstaller to help install software will just abort. Any advice is
appreciated.

Thank you for all of the advised. I removed sp2 and am now able to install
all of the programs.
