I have XP Pro and for some unknown reason I cannot open pictures or even see
the pictures in filmstrip. The only way I can see them is if I use open with
and select Internet Explorer. It will not work any other way I tried Gimp
Microsoft fax everything
Any ideas?

try this...

Click Start | Click Run | Paste: regsvr32 shimgvw.dll | Click OK

You should get a popup telling whether it worked or not.

If that doesn't work, make sure Preview default is set correctly.

When you open an image file in Windows XP the default action is to preview
it using the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image\ShellEx\ContextMenuHandlers\
ShellImagePreview
Value Name: (Default)
Value Type: REG_SZ
Value Data: {e84fda7c-1d6a-45f6-b725-cb260c236066}

Also if that doesn't work...
[[Installing a third-party image editor or viewer applications may sometimes
hijack the image file associations. In those cases, this utility allows you
repair the file associations for the following image file types to Windows
XP defaults:

BMP DIB EMF GIF JFIF JPG JPE JPEG PNG TIF TIFF WMF ]]

In addition to Wesley's advice, I believe the images need to be in a
"picture folder" for the slideshow feature to be present. By "picture
folder," I mean a folder that has been customized with one of the image
folder templates.
