I ran Windows Update today August 16, 2004 and installed whatever update it
was set up to do. It asked me to restart the computer, which I did. But I
now I can't get into my computer. The login screen comes up with "Owner" on
User Name and blank on Password. I have never had this login screen come up
before. I have never had a password. Now I'm frustrated that I can't get
into my computer. This is an older HP which I bought in October 2001 with
Window Home Edition which came installed with the computer. This was when
Windows first came out. And yes, my computer is running at 1.7 Gigahertz.
That is old!.

I'm on my new sony computer which is fine. That's how I'm able to write
this e-mail. Please help my get into my old computer where all my files are
at.

Thanks.

It's caused by .NET Framework Update from Microsoft. It creates an additional user account called ASP.NET and thus you are seeing the Welcome Screen at startup. But, don't need to remove this update or don't delete this account.

Click Start, Run and type "control userpasswords2", and click Ok. Uncheck "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer" option, and click Ok.

NOTE:
For Windows XP Home, don't try to auto-login as Administrator. This is because Windows XP Home Edition does not allow logging in as Administrator from Normal mode. Once you uncheck the option "Users must enter a user name" and click OK/Apply, Administrator account name will be displayed in the text box. Type-in a different user name and password in order to auto-login to that account.

Take care while entering the password. Typing an incorrect password makes XP to freeze at startup (during authentication) due to incorrect password and then displays the Welcome Screen after few seconds.

At start-up press F8 then select Safe Mode with networking, at login screen
click or type in Administrator, and with any luck there is no password
connected to that account and you should be able to fix the problem through
the control panel from there on.

Goodluck

Instead of tapping F8 once tap it once or twice a second and see if you can
get to safe mode.

The most overlooked advantage to owning a computer is that if they foul up
there's no law against wacking them around a little.

| Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately the F8 key that you suggested did
not
| work. I tried different password/no password with different user names
but
| no luck. I can't get passed this "Log On to Windows" screen.
|
| Any ideas?
|
| Thanks.

I gave that a try. No luck. There has to be another way to get around this
"Log On to Windows" screen.
