Found it. You have to click to the left and use initialize first :/

Guess Cal Bear can just sit there with a useless disk. Maybe he is
competing for a Darwin award.

nope????
Please explain how you can format an unpartitioned disk?

click initialize and format it. with vista you partition it later after
you have formatted

So you are saying it is possible to format an unpartitioned disk?

All my disks partitioned and formatted.

What the hell are you screeching about?

Wow, you are sensitive. I was agreeing with you (got the wrong name from
the string - sorry) about making it a volume first, you don't have to assign
it a letter as it states in your other post. Generally it is considered a
volume before a letter has been assigned and a partition after a letter is
assigned

I NEVER mentioned ANYTHING about a "drive letter" in this thread,
just that you must partition before formatting.

Snipe something nasty about Darwinism here...

You don't have to assign it a letter as it states in your other post. Per
your post.

Each volume is assigned its own drive letter

I had apologized, but you are a throwback, so I withdraw it.

A swing and a miss -- First you initialize it, then you partition it,
then you format.

The partitioning step can be skipped in the UI in some cases (Installing
the OS on a fresh drive, for example), but it still happens.

So the direct copy and paste quote from Windows Help and Support
is a "throwback", eh? And, to be exact, that post was made AFTER
your rude childish snipe.

What the hell does assigning a drive letter have to do with whether or not
partitioning is required before formatting?

Why don't you just stop your smug self-congratulatory digs altogether?

Perhaps your bloated ego gets in the way of your comprehension?

Say something smug, nasty, rude here...

Ahh, think we are talking about different scenarios. I am talking about
within windows vista. i.e not from the cd.
