This sounds like an old problem. I've just upgreaded from Windows ME
to XP home. Everything works fine except I get an error message saying
there is no dial tone when I try to use the internal modem (Diamond
Multimedia Supra SST 56i proDF). When I try to select a new driver,
the PC will only use a generic driver (and suggests no alternatives).
I have so far failed to get it to recognise two alternative drivers
that I downloaded from the Diamond site. Any help gratefully received
as I'm pulling my hair out over this.

Cheers,

Brian

May be a stupid question, but have you tested the phone line and phone jack?
(the one the computer is plugged into and using.)

There are several possibilities.
Do you subscribe to a voice mail service provided by your phone company?
Some of them will change the dialtone characteristics when you have a voice
mail.

What country do you live in? Not all modems support multiple countries but
your modem may be set to the wrong country and therefore not recognize the
dial tone provided by your phone company. You can check this by going to
Control Panel, Printers and Other Hardware, Phone and Modem Options, click
the Modems tab, select your modem and click Properties, select the Advanced
tab. If your modem supports multiple countries there will be a
Country/Region Select dialog. Try changing this to the correct country if it
is incorrect.

A general work around is try going to the Modem tab in Phone and Modem
Options and unchecking the Wait for dial tone before dialing box. Then try
dialing out.

Finally, if you can get to the Internet by some other means try connecting
to Windows Update and see if a newer driver is offered.

Much obliges to all who have replied. The phone connection at the
socket is fine, we have the correct country setting (UK) and we do
have a voicemail service but have no messages waiting to be collected
that might alter the dial tone. We've tried telling the PC not to wait
for a dial tone but this seems to have no positive effect. I'll try
shooting for an updated driver and see where that leads.

Cheers,

Brian
