No longer to move or copy files

I am no longer able to move or copy files from one folder to another folder
or to a CDR. When ever I go to a file in a folder and click on the Move
file to or Copy file to in the left hand menu, windows freezes and stops
responding and then the shell disappears and rebuilds itself but many of the
icons in the system tray disappear. I have to log off and log back on to
return to my original shell configuration.

I use to be able to move/copy files all the time from a folder to a CD for
burning or to another folder on my computer.

I can move files if I run Windows explorer. But not in the XP folder shell.

Any suggestions as a cause and possible fix.

Thanks for your help.

Sounds like the registry is screwed, try restoring to a save point or if
that doesn't work -> reinstall.

A question about re-installing windows.

If I re-install from my original CD will I have to re-install SP1 also?

What affect will a re-install have on files, programs etc on the computer?

Your help is appreciated. Is there a program available to fix the registry
without doing a re-install?

The problem I have with the shell continues and anytime I try to copy or
move files, the shell crashes.

First, did you do a System Restore? What changed between the time things
worked and the time they didn't? Did you scan with a current antivirus
using updated definitions? Since you never gave system specs, I can't
comment on your machine, but perhaps you're having a hardware issue -
RAM, heating, hard drive. You should really determine (if possible) why
you're having this problem.

As far as doing a reinstall, if you do a Repair Installation, this has
the effect of installing Windows on top of itself and should leave your
extant programs and data alone. However, you should always back up your
data before doing this because Stuff Happens. Yes, you'll have to
reinstall SP1 and subsequent patches.

A clean installation (formatting the hard drive first) will get rid of
everything on the hard drive.

If you aren't sure how to do any of this, take your machine to a good
local computer repair shop (not a CompUSA or Best Buy), have them test
it and if necessary, save your data and reinstall Windows.
