No light on screen - black, but with images underneath

This is hard for me to explain, but this just started: my screen appears to go black after i bring it back from sleep or idle mode, booting it, etc.; i say appears because when titled into the light, i can see my logon screen - and once logged on i can see my destop. But, its so dark i can just barely see it. I am fearful of reinstalling any drivers, going to safe mode, etc. because it goes black so quickly, i am scared of being in a very bad spot! Any ideas??

Nothing whatsoever to do with drivers - or Windows. Sounds as though the
screen's backlight is dying. Have Dell replace it under warranty.
