(Writing for my friend - who has no internet now!)
Took laptop home from Uni, when he came back it refused to connect to the
university network.
In "View Network Connections" it shows two dial up accounts, but nothing else.
Also his USB mouse and printer refuse to work.

If somehow he's managed to erase his drivers, how can I find out what he
needs? Its a Dell laptop, although I don't know why that would make a
difference.
Thanks a lot.

Prid,

I don't think is a driver problem because XP would be able to reinstall them
if missing. However it doesn't do the same when new drivers are installed
and do not work.

right click on the my computer icon, click on properties
Go to the hardware tab and click on device manager

check to see if the network adapters show up and if they have a yellow
exclamation mark. Same thing with the universal serial bus controllers.

If they have the yellow marker go there and do a driver rollback to use the
previous driver... or delete the driver to force windows to use the default
one.

if there is nothing, right click on the comptuer name and click on scan for
hardware changes. It should detect the devices.

if all that does not work, probably your friend disable the network port and
usb ports from the BIOS.
Turn on the comptuer and press "del" key to enter bios, or follow the
instructions on screen to enter the bios.
Then check the properties for the network card and usb ports.

hope this helps,
RT

The simplest answer is to tell your friend to do a system restore to a date
prior to taking it home.
