No kernel crash dumps on XPE w/o swap??

Hi,

Is it possible to get kernel crash dumps to work on a system with no swap
file?

We have switched to XPE for our main product line. We're now booting from
flash, and have managed to eliminate the harddrive. For this reason, we must
also disable the swap file. I hear rumors that Windows' built-in kernel crash
dumping won't work without a swap file?

We'd be happy to write the crash dump directly to flash, is this possible in
XPE?

Thanks,

/ Hannes.

Hannes,

No reason to listen out for rumors when the search engine is available :-)

Also, please read this KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;314482
(please note : "However, if you remove the paging file from the boot partition, Windows cannot create a dump file (Memory.dmp) in
which to write debugging information in the event that a kernel mode Stop Error message occurs. This could lead to extended downtime
if you must debug to troubleshoot the Stop error message.")

Well, to not kill the flash, we must disable the page file.

I've done a fair bit of searching, and the articles seem to indicate that
memory dumps can only be generated if the system has a pagefile, on the boot
volume.

So I guess we're out of luck.

Thanks,

/ Hannes.
