Hi ...

Hope somebody can give me a hand here. Boss gave me a CD and said,
"There's a database on here with some kind of front end. Figure out how to
export the data to Excel, or at least to a text file."

I installed the program and ran it. It opened Microsoft Access. That was
a fairly large surprise in itself, because, as far as I know, Access is not
installed on my computer.

Well, I figured there was prolly an Export command on the File Menu. But
there's not. The only things on the File Menu are Close And Exit. No `Save.'
No `Print.' No Save As' etc.

So I looked at the help file. It says, "In the Database Window, click the
name of the table, query, view or stored procedure you want to export, and
then on the file menu, click Export."

Hmm. I had the right idea. Then I thought maybe the Window on my screen was
not the Database Window, but some other Window altogether. That appears to
be the case, since my Window looks nothing like the illustration in the Help
file.

So ... How do I get to the Database Window?? No, that's not really my
question. I want to know how to Export a record to Excel or text.

Appreciate any help.

Hold down the Shift Key when you open the database. This will by-pass any
start up code and menu customization.

To export a table, click File|Export. Then select the File Type, and
follow the prompts.

Thank you. I was open to successfully open Access. But I have been unable to
export file.

First, I got little window asking if I wanted to convert database or open
it. I clicked convert.

It opened (after several minutes) In a different form than it had been in
before. I mean before, it had been in the form of a form, but now it was
like a spreadsheet. Only a tiny amout of the data was there, and some of it
was garbled.

After tinkering, I got it to open in the form of a form, like it was before.
I exported it, but, again, only a small amount of the data got to the Xls
file. When I opened it in Excel, it distotred the height and width of the
cells, and scrunched almost all the data into the left most cell. It also
arbitrarily added column headings.

Next, I tried to open original file and click on Open instead of convert.
Then it said somethhing to the efect, "you must choose convert from tools
menu ..." But convert is grayed out.,

Why do they have to make things so hard?? All I want is to make the file
into a Xls file, or even a text file. It seems like that would be a common
task. Why can't they make it so you can just do it??

Can anybody help?? Does anybody even understand this rambling note??

Thank you

Sam

If you don't think you had Access before you ran the CD, it's entirely
possible that the CD installed the Access runtime. While it's the same
executable as regular Access, many of its features are disabled through
literally hundreds of registry entries.

If you do have the runtime, you may not be able to do what you're trying to
do.

Hi Sam,

Here's a different method that might work for you:

1.) Create a new spreadsheet in Excel. Click into an empty cell.
2.) Click on Data > Import External Data > Import Data...
(Note: the 3rd choice, Import Data..., will be grayed out if you start in a cell that is
not empty).
3.) This should open up a "Select Data Source" dialog box. Navigate to the folder that contains
your database and select it.
4.) Select the appropriate table or query.
5.) Follow the rest of the steps in the wizard.
