Hi

I surfed the web last night, shut down my laptop and went to sleep. Next day I have no internet connection on my laptop. I have cable internet. My desktop connects to the internet but not my laptop. So, I know my cable service if fine. I did ipconfig and I have a ip address. I look at my network properties: It says I am connected at 10Mbits/sec. I am sending thousands of packets but receiving only 50 or 60. Apparently I am not receiving anything. I uninstalled and reinstalled my ethernet card. It still does the same thing. I cannot surf the internet nor connect to messenger services. Could it be a virus of some sort.Should I format my conputer. Please help?

Sheb,

Please provide ipconfig information for the laptop and desktop.
Start - Run - "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in
Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

Get Process Explorer (free) from
<http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml>. Provides way more
information than Task Manager. And Port Explorer (free) from
<http://www.diamondcs.com.au/portexplorer/index.php?page=home> will show you
what network connections your computer is actually opening, and what processes
are opening them.

From each computer:
1) Ping www.yahoo.com.
2) Ping 66.94.230.33.
Report error messages.

How current is your virus protection? Try these free online virus scans:
<http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/license.php>
<http://security.symantec.com/ssc/home.asp>
<http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp>

Now check for, and learn to defend against, additional carriers of infection.

First, download LSP-Fix from <http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm>, and CWShredder
from <http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4086.html>. Both free.

Next, run CWShredder. Have it fix all variants.

Now check for, and remove, spyware. Get HijackThis
<http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=3155> and Spybot S&D
<http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download>. Both free.
1) Install and run Spybot. First update it ("Search for updates"), then run a
scan ("Check for problems"). Trust Spybot, and make all recommended deletions.
2) Install and run HijackThis. Do NOT make any changes immediately. Save the
HJT Log.
3) Have your HJT log interpreted by experts at one or more of the following
forums (and post it here):
<http://forums.net-integration.net/>
<http://www.spywareinfo.com/forums/>
<http://forums.tomcoyote.org/>
<http://www.wilderssecurity.com/>

If removal of any spyware affects your ability to access the internet (some
spyware builds itself into the network software, and its removal may damage your
network), run LSP-Fix.

Harden your browser. There are various websites which will check for
vulnerabilities, here are three which I use.
http://www.jasons-toolbox.com/BrowserSecurity/
http://bcheck.scanit.be/bcheck/
https://testzone.secunia.com/browser_checker/

Harden your operating system. Check at least monthly.
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

Block possibly dangerous websites with a Hosts file. Three Hosts file sources I
use:
http://www.accs-net.com/hosts/get_hosts.html
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
(The third is included, and updated, with Spybot (see above)).

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

I am having exactly same problem. I have tried to create
a ipconfig.txt as suggested, but this doesn't work
either. (No file is created). I have pinged yahoo, but
it says Ping request could not find host. I can
successfully ping 66.94.230.33.

Please help,
Shelley

Shelley,

You either have no dns, or a dns hijack.

Start - Run - "cmd" - In the command window, "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" -
Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

Search your entire system drive - including all hidden and system folders - for
file "hosts". There is one legit one - in ...\system32\drivers\etc.

I,m having the problem too.

I have run a virus scan (McAfee) on my entire C drive - nothing found. I
always had McAfee firewall running.

My desktop, running XP Home, was able to connect to my cable modem, now
it cannot. I have a linksys wireless router (laptop connected to net via
this), my desktop connects to the router via the RealTek and to the
laptop via the linksys adapter. The ipconfig.txt included below was just
created.

I have tried connecting the laptop directly to the cable modem (with the
linksys cable remove) and get the same values for the RealTek. Doing a
Status | Support | Repair fails with a message saying I should contact
my ISP. Comcast says it is not their problem and cannot help. My PC
manufacutrer offered some suggestions that did not work. Their last
suggestion was to re-install XP Home. Since that wipes out everything on
my C drive, I can't do that yet.

Any suggestions?

Bob,

You would really be better off starting a new thread (writing a new article with
a different title) rather than posting your problem under someone else's
problem.

If you like, post a reply with your new article's title, so those of us watching
this thread can look for it. But you will get much better response with a new
article. Many folks won't see your request for help just above.

And Bob, please don't contribute to the spread of email address mining viruses.
Learn to munge your email address properly, to keep yourself a bit safer when
posting to open forums. Protect yourself and the rest of the internet - never
post your address unmunged.
