I ran a spyware remover program and can no longer connect to internet. I
have re-installed XP, talked for an hour with HP, for longer with Comcast,
had Comcast come out and they identified that it was not the modem, cable,
etc. They mentioned that it could be a winsock problem (?). They were
unable to get other than 169 IP address. It seems that it must be one of the
57,000 files that the spyware program removed, but was not reloaded when I
reloaded XP (home). Suggestions?

A 169 address means that you are not able to access a DHCP server and Windows
XP assigns you an Automatic Private IP Address (APIPA). Winsock would not be
a factor in this issue since it's use is software related. Your problem is
most likely a hardware issue potentially between the cable modem and the
computer.

How is your cable modem connected to your computer? Are you using a USB
connection or are you using an ethernet connection into your network card.
Have you tried using the other type of connector? If you are going from
ethernet to USB you may need software to get the device detected. You could
just have a bad ethernet cable. I would also check for link lights on the
network card and the cable modem.

Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.
