Hi,
I have Windows XP Pro.
This problem has started about 10 days ago and I am unable to fix it. I have
a laptop, it is plugged into a Draytek Vigor Routor via a network cable.
Everytime I turn the computer off and come into work the next day and turn
it back on I have lost my internet connection. If I unplug the cable from
the back of the computer and plug it back in again I am then able to surf
the internet and get emails with out any problems. The weird thing is that
although the internet connection is lost the network (that is running
through the router) is working fine at all times.

I have checked the settings on the computer and also rebooted the router
many times. Everything seems to be OK and there isn't any problems
registered under 'Computer Management'.

Any suggestions would be great.
Thanks
Lenny

Lenny,

Is the router a DCHP server assigning an IP to your computer? You should
check this

On the computer you should check your IP like so:

Click START
Click RUN
Type 'cmd' (without quotes) & click OK
Type 'ipconfig /all' (no quotes & remember the space between the 'g' & '/')
Press ENTER

What IP do you have? If it starts with 169... then the router hasn't
assigned the machine an IP

Is the router set to Internet always connected or connected on demand?

Will await for your reply to my questions,

Open Device Manager, open the properties on your ethernet card or NIC,
click the Power tab, and deselect "Allow the computer to turn off this
device to save power". If it's a USB device, deselect that option for
the USB devices.

Thanks for the replies.

I am thinking that it isn't the router as I have 2 other computers connected
to it and they are not having the same problem. I downloaded, installed and
then uninstalled Firefox about the same time as this started to happen. I am
not sure that is relevant though as I am also unable to access emails
(Outlook) until the network cable has been unplugged and plugged back in.

For some reason it looks like the power saving settings must have changed
(automatically!). I have changed the settings on the laptop for when the
machine is unplugged to be the same settings as when it is plugged in (Hard
drive and screen never turn off) and that seems to have solved the problem.

I have no idea why this might have happened and would like to know but the
problem seems to have been solved.
Thanks again for the advice.
