I have developed a problem which has been posted about before but I
haven't found a satisfactory solution. After updating itunes and
adding a Belkin wireless network adaptor, my computer has developed a
huge problem.

I now just get the background wallpaper with no icons, no taskbar,
nothing. I can get the task manager, and this shows that explorer.exe
is not running, and if I try to run it I just get an error message.

In safe mode I still get nothing, and it now only seems to start in
safe mode. I've tried system restore, but it makes no difference, and
I've run Macafee virus software which says the system is clean.

I don't know what to try next - if anyone can help it would be really
apreciated. (the sysstem is windows XP)

Thanks

Simon

If you don't have a current backup of all important data slave the drive
into another XP or win2k system and copy the important data. Then put
it back in the original machine, boot from the XP CD and do a repair
install:

http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

After that is completed you will need to reinstall all updates from the
windows update site.

If the system isn't working after that you might consider a clean
install. All programs will need to be reinstalled from original media
and the data restored from the backup.
