I run Windows XP Pro on my system and have had the
computer about 1 1/2 years with no problems. Last night I
was in OE and was about to delete a junk e-mail when my
system froze. The system rebooted itself but when
everything came back up, I had no icons on my desktop.
The system runs extremely slow and I have to shut down
through the task manager. When I tried to reboot, the
system took me to the bios screen and said that my CPU was
set for the incorrect speed (which it is not, but maybe my
CPU is failing). I don't understand what is wrong. I
can't get to any of my programs on my desktop. I have
tried going under my husband's profile and his icons do
come up, but he doesn' have as many as I do because I am
the primary user of the computer. Even under his profile,
the system runs incredibly slow. What could have
happened?

Hello!
Right click on the desktop, choose properties and click on
"Customize Desktop". Internet Explorer, Recycle Bin, My
Documents and/or My Network Places can be added or removed
here.

Hi. Let's get basic. Have you run a virus checker? A
good free one can be downloaded at www.grisoft.com.
Have you cleaned out your recycle bin, temp directory and
temporary internet files directory? This is fundamental,
I know, but I run into people all the time who don't
maintain their systems at all.
There are many free and shareware programs that will
clean your registry of unused or invalid entries. A very
good commercial program for system maintenance is Fix-It
Utilities by Ontrack.
Hope this helps.
